Marco Reus has revealed that Jadon Sancho was very proud after ending Borussia Dortmund’s game against Augsburg on Saturday as captain. When Reus was subbed off in the 83rd minute, Sancho asked him if he could have the captain’s armband. The BVB captain told him to give it to Mats Hummels, but later he saw him wearing the armband himself. Reus said after the game that while it was not planned beforehand, wearing the captain’s armband was an honour for Sancho. Speaking to BVB-TV as part of the Borussia Dortmund Matchday Review, Reus said:

"“I was closer to Jadon, and I gave it to Jadon. He said ‘Can I take it?’, and I said ‘Yes, but give it to Mats.’ I didn’t realise at first until someone on the bench saw it and told us. I think it was an honour for him. He was very proud when came into the dressing room, and it’s all okay, no problem at all.”"

Captaining the side in the closing stages of the game capped off what was a sublime performance from Sancho. The Englishman caused the Augsburg defence all sorts of problems over the course of the 90 minutes, and scored the goal which gave Borussia Dortmund the lead in the second half.

Manuel Akanji was also very happy to see Sancho wear the captain’s armband, and said that it was well-earned after a world class performance from him against Augsburg.

"“After a few minutes when Jadon dropped back I suddenly saw he was wearing the captain’s armband! But I’m delighted for him and I think he deserved it with his performance.”"

Sancho also spoke after the game about his desire to score goals help the team win matches.“We had to show the fans that the fighting spirit doesn’t stop,” Sancho said. “Everyone believes that we could win and pulled off a great performance.  I am just happy that I could contribute to the win and help the team. Hopefully I can do this every week now.”

Sancho endured a slow start to the season but has been in excellent form since the turn of the year, scoring three goals and providing four assists in six appearances in January. He will be aiming to continue this run going into the business end of the season and lead Borussia Dortmund to a top four finish in the Bundesliga.
