Rumour: Borussia Dortmund looking for new first choice goalkeeper to replace Roman Bürki
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund are reportedly looking to bring in a new goalkeeper to replace Roman Bürki. According to Süddeutsche Zeitung, despite extending Bürki’s contract until 2023 just last summer, the Black and Yellows want to sign a new first-choice goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.
This follows a report from BILD which claimed that Borussia Dortmund have three goalkeepers on their list of potential targets. Ajax’s André Onana, RB Leipzig’s Péter Gulácsi and SL Benfica’s Odysseas Vlachodimos were the names mentioned by the tabloid. Although following Onana’s 12-month ban for a doping violation, it is unlikely that he is still a target.
Gulácsi reportedly has a release clause in his contract and could be available for a fee of 10-15 million euros. While Vlachodimos still has three and a half years remaining on his current deal.
Borussia Dortmund face a goalkeeping dilemma in the summer
Süddeutsche Zeitung add that Bürki’s problems in controlling the penalty area and with long-range shots have been an issue in Dortmund for some time now. The Swiss shot-stopper only signed a contract extension with BVB in June, but has come under a bit of criticism in recent weeks. He is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, with compatriot Marwin Hitz filling in between the sticks.
Hitz looked far from assured on Saturday against Freiburg though, and was beaten far too easily by two long-range efforts. His contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and it remains to be seen if he will sign an extension.
The future also looks uncertain for Bürki, and it will be interesting to see how the BVB bosses handle the goalkeeping situation in the summer transfer window.
