A place in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals will be on the line as Borussia Dortmund go up against Sevilla in the second leg of their round of 16 tie on Tuesday evening.

Having earned a 3-2 win in the first leg in Spain, Borussia Dortmund go into the second leg as slight favourites. But Sevilla’s late goal in the first leg, combined with Dortmund’s injuries, means that the tie is still fascinatingly poised. And we could be in for a captivating second leg under the lights at the Westfalenstadion on Tuesday.

Borussia Dortmund’s four game winning streak was snapped by Bayern Munich at the weekend. The Black and Yellows actually raced to a two goal lead in that game, but the Bavarians bounced back to earn a 4-2 win. The defeat will have certainly deflated the Dortmund dressing room. But a good result against Sevilla could be just the confidence boost they need to get back on track.

They are the favourites heading into the game, having scored three away goals last month in Spain. But they simply cannot afford to take their foot off the gas if they want to make it to the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time since the 2016/17 season.

Sevilla went into the first leg on the back of a nine game winning run. But they have lost three of the four games they have played since their 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund. Julen Lopetegui’s side lost 2-1 to relegation candidates Elche at the weekend. But perhaps they can take inspiration from the two goal lead they squandered to Barcelona in the second leg of the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey last week.

Borussia Dortmund’s leaky defence will also give the Andalusian side some hope of pulling off a comeback, but they have lost four of their last five games against German opposition.
