Borussia Dortmund defender Dan-Axel Zagadou will be out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his injured knee.
Zagadou suffered a knee injury during training last week, and after intensive examinations it was revealed that he would be requiring a surgery. Borussia Dortmund have now confirmed that the 21 year old has successfully undergone surgery on his injured knee, and he will not be available for the remainder of the season.
This is the third knee injury Zagadou has suffered over the last two years. The Frenchman suffered a torn knee ligament during training in April ahead of the Bundesliga restart after the COVID-19 enforced break. He made his return to the team in June, but then suffered another knee injury during the pre-season friendly against SCR Altach in August. That injury ruled him out for three months. He also missed eight games after suffering a torn hamstring earlier this year.
Zagadou has been limited to just 13 appearances across all competitions this season. According to Transfermarkt, the highly rated defender has missed 55 games due to injuries since joining Borussia Dortmund from Paris St. Germain in 2017.
Zagadou’s injury leaves Borussia Dortmund with just two senior central defenders in their ranks in Mats Hummels and Manuel Akanji. Emre Can has also been used as a centre-back quite frequently in recent months. Lukasz Piszczek and Thomas Delaney can also play in that role if need be.
With the Black and Yellows still involved in all three competitions, Zagadou’s absence will certainly be felt by the team in the coming weeks.
