Borussia Dortmund II moved nine points clear at the top of the Regionalliga West standings with a 1-0 win away to Fortuna Düsseldorf II on Saturday. The win helped the Black and Yellows take another big step towards promotion, as second placed Rot-Weiss Essen dropped points yet again.

Looking to earn their 21st win of the season, Borussia Dortmund II took the lead in the 20th minute thanks to Tobias Raschl’s penalty. The talented midfielder stepped up and scored his fifth goal of the season (to go along with his seven assists) after Richmond Tachie was brought down inside the box.

Enrico Maaßen’s side looked to press for a second goal, but they had to settle for a 1-0 lead going into the break.

Fortuna Düsseldorf II looked much more dangerous in the second half, and BVB goalkeeper Luca Unbehaun was forced into making a few vital saves. The Borussia Dortmund U-23s had their chances too, and Steffen Tigges forced three saves from the Düsseldorf goalkeeper in the final ten minutes of the game.

Fortuna Düsseldorf II worked hard to find a late equaliser, but the BVB II defence held firm. In the end, Tobias Raschl’s first half penalty was enough to seal the three points and make it three wins in a row for Borussia Dortmund II.

It was a vital win too, as promotion rivals Rot-Weiss Essen could only manage to get a 1-1 draw away to RW Oberhausen. The result leaves Borussia Dortmund II in the driver’s seat to win promotion to the third division of German football, although Essen do still have a game in hand.
