Borussia Dortmund internationals: Erling Haaland and Norway thrashed by Turkey
By Tushar Bahl
Erling Haaland was the only Borussia Dortmund player in action on Saturday, and the striker had an evening to forget as Norway were handed a 3-0 defeat by Turkey in their World Cup qualifying clash.
Norway were looking to build on their impressive win over Gibraltar, but they fell behind after just four minutes. Ozan Tufan opened the scoring for Turkey with an excellent first-time finish from the edge of the box. RB Leipzig striker Alexander Sörloth nearly pulled Norway back level in the 26th minute. But his shot cannoned back off the post.
Just two minutes later, Caglar Söyüncü headed home Turkey’s second goal from a corner. And Ozan Tufan then made it 3-0 in the second half with a stunning strike from outside the box. Norway ended the game with ten men after Kristian Thorstvedt was sent off in the 80th minute.
Haaland and Norway still have one more World Cup qualifier to play this month. They go up against Montenegro on Tuesday.
Belgium were also in action on Saturday, as they took on Czech Republic. But quarantine restrictions prevented Borussia Dortmund duo Thorgan Hazard and Thomas Meunier from playing. If Hazard and Meunier had played in Prague, they would have had to quarantine after returning to Germany.
Youssoufa Moukoko missed Germany U-21s’ 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in the European U-21 Championship due to an injury. The Borussia Dortmund striker had also missed the win over Hungary on Wednesday. It remains to be seen if he will be fit in time for Germany’s final group stage match against Romania on Tuesday.
