The UEFA Champions League makes its long-awaited return this week as Borussia Dortmund make the trip to England to take on Manchester City in the first leg of their quarterfinal.

Manchester City are the clear favourites heading into the tie. But Borussia Dortmund will be out to show that they have what it takes to pull off an upset.

Manchester City have won each of their last five games, and haven’t conceded a goal in any of the last four. Pep Guardiola’s side are cruising towards the English Premier League title, and currently find themselves 14 points clear at the top of the table. They earned a relatively straight-forward 2-0 win over third placed Leicester City on Saturday.

Manchester City cruised past Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Champions League round of 16. And they have conceded just one goal in the competition so far this season. So they will be confident of their chances against Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals.

Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of finishing in the top four were left in tatters after their 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt. The Black and Yellows were second best in all departments on Saturday. And they will need to do a lot better than they have done in recent games if they are to have any chance of overcoming the challenge of Manchester City.

The Black and Yellows have won just of their last five games, and momentum is certainly not on their side heading into the tie. Edin Terzic faces the biggest test of his fledgling coaching career as he looks to outclass Pep Guardiola and his ruthless Manchester City side.

One thing Dortmund can take inspiration from, though, is the fact that City have been eliminated at this stage of the Champions League in each of the last three seasons.
