Hertha Berlin squad in full quarantine after positive COVID-19 tests
The entire Hertha Berlin squad has been placed under a mandatory 14-day home quarantine after multiple players and staff members tested positive for COVID-19. The Berliners have suspended training and have requested the DFL to postpone their next three Bundesliga games.
Hertha Berlin were due to face FSV Mainz 05 in a relegation six-pointer this weekend. And with next week being an English week in the Bundesliga, their games against SC Freiburg and FC Schalke 04 will now also have to be postponed.
Hertha Berlin head coach Pal Dardai, assistant coach Admir Hamzagic and striker Dodi Lukebakio had tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday morning. Sporting director Arne Friedrich led the training session on Thursday. But after defender Marvin Plattenhardt also returned a positive test, the capital club was forced to take this measure.
Hertha Berlin, who are currently involved in the relegation battle, will now hope to play their catch-up games in the last week of April or the first week of May. Only the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal are scheduled for the May 01/02 weekend, giving teams the opportunity to fulfil their fixtures.
The DFL was considering implementing 14-day quarantine training camps for the 36 teams in the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga last month. While the measure was not adopted then, it may come back on the table now. Several matches in the 2. Bundesliga have also been postponed in recent weeks, with two teams currently in quarantine.
Holstein Kiel, who are due to face Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal, are ones of those two teams. The Pokal semi-final is scheduled for May 01.
