Borussia Dortmund’s win over VfL Wolfsburg, combined with Eintracht Frankfurt’s loss to Bayer Leverkusen, means that the Bundesliga top four race is fascinatingly poised going into the final three games of the season.
Erling Haaland’s brace helped Borussia Dortmund earn a 2-0 win in their six-pointer against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday, in what was a must win game for the Black and Yellows. The win helped Der BVB close the gap to third placed Wolfsburg to just two points.
The result also heaped pressure on Eintracht Frankfurt ahead of their crunch clash against sixth placed Bayer Leverkusen. And the Eagles suffered a 3-1 defeat to Hannes Wolf’s side, blowing the top four race wide open with just three games left in the season.
All four sides still have a chance of finishing in the top four. Wolfsburg currently occupy third place with 57 points to their name. Eintracht Frankfurt are a point and a place behind. While Borussia Dortmund are in fifth place with 55 points. Bayer Leverkusen currently occupy sixth place and have an outside chance, with 50 points to their name after 31 matches.
Edin Terzic’s side have a better goal difference than their top four rivals, which could give them the edge if they win all three of their remaining games.
Borussia Dortmund still have to face RB Leipzig (H), Mainz 05 (A) and Bayer Leverkusen (H). Wolfsburg’s remaining fixtures will see them go up against Union Berlin (H), RB Leipzig (A) and Mainz 05 (H).
Eintracht Frankfurt are due to take on Mainz 05 (H), Schalke 04 (A), SC Freiburg (H). While Bayer Leverkusen’s remaining fixtures are against Werder Bremen (A), Union Berlin (H) and Borussia Dortmund (A).
It has been a Bundesliga season full of twists and turns so far. And there could be plenty more to come with three matchdays still left. The battle to qualify for the Champions League looks set to go right down to the wire.
