Rumour: Borussia Dortmund interested in signing Stuttgart goalkeeper Gregor Kobel
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund are being linked with a move for Stuttgart goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, with the Stuttgarter Zeitung reporting that he is one of the club’s preferred candidates.
Kobel is enjoying an impressive season with VfB Stuttgart, and put in an excellent performance in the defeat to RB Leipzig at the weekend, making a total of nine saves. The 23 year old has made 32 appearances so far this season, keeping six clean sheets.
Kobel still has more than three years left on his current Stuttgart contract. And the report adds that the Swabians will demand a fee of 16-18 million euros to part ways with him.
BILD claim that RB Leipzig are also interested in signing Kobel from Stuttgart. But neither Borussia Dortmund nor RB Leipzig have made an approach yet for the former Hoffenheim goalkeeper.
Borussia Dortmund will likely be in the market for a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. But a lot will depend on whether they qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League. The Black and Yellows will also look to sell Roman Bürki before they bring in a new goalkeeper.
Borussia Dortmund have been linked with a number of goalkeepers in recent months, including RB Leipzig’s Péter Gulácsi, Benfica’s Odysseas Vlachodimos, Fiorentina’s Bartlomiej Dragowski, Bayern Munich’s Alexander Nübel and Wolfsburg’s Koen Casteels.
Marwin Hitz is currently Borussia Dortmund’s first-choice goalkeeper, having taken over from Bürki in late-January. But it remains to be seen what the BVB bosses’ plans are for next season. Both Hitz and Bürki have just over two years left on their contracts.
