Borussia Dortmund advanced to the DFB-Pokal final with a 5-0 win over Holstein Kiel on Saturday. With the cup final taking place on Thursday, May 13, Dortmund’s Bundesliga clash against Mainz 05 (originally scheduled for May 15) on Matchday 33 has now been rescheduled by the DFL.
Borussia Dortmund’s penultimate Bundesliga game of the season will now take place on Sunday, May 16, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00 CET (17:00 BST). Edin Terzic’s side will make the trip to Mainz 05, who have enjoyed an impressive resurgence since the appointment of Bo Svensson as head coach.
RB Leipzig’s Matchday 33 clash against VfL Wolfsburg will also be played on the same date. The game at the Red Bull Arena will kick-off at 20:30 CET (19:30 BST).
Normally, all Bundesliga fixtures for the final two matchdays are played at the same time. But this change has been made to ensure that Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have sufficient time to recover from the DFB-Pokal final.
The two rescheduled games will have a lot riding on them, with Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg both competing for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Wolfsburg are currently third in the Bundesliga standings, two points and two places clear of the Black and Yellows. Eintracht Frankfurt, who occupy fourth place, are one point ahead of Der BVB at the moment. Sixth placed Bayer Leverkusen are also in the race, but only have a slim chance of finishing in the top four.
With just three games left in the Bundesliga season, the top four race looks set to go down the wire.
