Borussia Dortmund face a crunch clash against RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga this weekend as they look to keep pace with their top four rivals. Ahead of Saturday’s game, Edin Terzic gave an injury update on Erling Haaland, Gio Reyna and Mateu Morey.
Erling Haaland missed last weekend’s DFB-Pokal semi-final against Holstein Kiel with a muscle injury. While Gio Reyna was subbed off at half time with a calf problem. The attacking duo did not take part in training on Tuesday or Wednesday, but Edin Terzic said during his pre-match press conference that he hoped to welcome the duo back training on Thursday.
"“Erling has not been on the training pitch in the last few days. But we expect him to be able to train again today, be pain-free and then also be an option for Saturday.”“He (Reyna) looks very confident. He’ll be on the training field right away as well, then we’ll have another session today and tomorrow and then we’ll see if it’s too risky or if he can play”"
Despite Terzic’s words, Ruhr Nachrichten report that Haaland did not train with the team on Thursday either. Although Reyna did take part in the session.
Having Haaland and Reyna in the team will be crucial to Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of beating RB Leipzig this weekend. Haaland has found the net four times in just two games against Julian Nagelsmann’s side. While Reyna scored a brace last weekend against Holstein Kiel.
The RB Leipzig game is a must-win one for the Black and Yellows, who currently find themselves a point behind fourth placed Eintracht Frankfurt. Anything other than a win on Saturday could spell curtains for their hopes of playing Champions League football next season.
Edin Terzic also provided an update on Mateu Morey, who injured his lateral collateral, capsular and anterior cruciate ligaments in the game against Holstein Kiel. The Spaniard had surgery earlier this week, and will need to undergo another operation at a later date.
Terzic said that it is too early to accurately estimate how long Morey will be out for. “Given the circumstances, Mateu is doing well. He is dealing with the situation very positively. The first operation went very well, but it’s too early to accurately estimate how long he’ll be out for.”
