Jadon Sancho very happy at Borussia Dortmund but remains unsure about future
Jadon Sancho played a pivotal role in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-2 win against RB Leipzig on Saturday, scoring two critical goals to keep his side’s Champions League hopes alive. After the game, he also spoke about his future.
It was a very much needed spirited performance from Borussia Dortmund against RB Leipzig, with the club needing all three points to continue their push for the much coveted Champions League spots. Without Erling Haaland there to lead the charge in attack, it fell to the likes of Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho to provide the goods, which they did in emphatic fashion. Sancho’s brace in particular sealed the game for the Black and Yellows, making sure that this year’s Bundesliga finale will be an interesting one to follow for devoted fans and neutrals alike.
Sancho’s performance underlined just how important he is to his side, taking charge in a game where they needed him most. It’s performances like this that will make Dortmund fans want to block out all the rumors surrounding a potential Sancho exit this summer. In his post match interview, Sancho was asked about his BVB future:
"“I don’t know about my future. I am very happy here in Dortmund at the moment. I love the club, the fans and the team. They gave me my first professional start. The fans motivate and push me to the limit.” – Jadon Sancho, ESPN"
Sancho’s future at Dortmund was always going to be a hot topic this summer after Dortmund snubbed multiple bids from Manchester United the year prior. Both Hans-Joachim Watzke and Michael Zorc have been quite calm about his situation at the club, however. In an interview with ARD, Zorc made it quite clear that there has been a “gentleman’s agreement” in place between the club and Sancho since last year that indicates he would be able to leave the club this summer if certain conditions were met. The “conditions” seem to be a 100 million euro price tag.
It remains to be seen if any clubs will actually bring the required sum to the table to pry Sancho away from Dortmund. The likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool have all been linked to a move for the player, but it isn’t a given that their interest will materialize into a concrete bid.
Whatever the case may be, Dortmund are still in a good position when it comes to their mercurial winger. A sale would mean a potential for a much needed revamp of the squad, and having him stay improves their chances of silverware for the coming season.
Before Dortmund and Sancho look too far ahead into the future however, all their energies will be focused on securing the DFB Pokal this coming Thursday and making sure they qualify for the Champions League for next season. Sancho will surely play an immense role in making sure these goals come to fruition.
