Edin Terzic led Borussia Dortmund to the DFB-Pokal trophy on Thursday. After the game, Hans-Joachim Watzke revealed that they have handed the 38 year old a long-term contract extension. Despite the new contract, Watzke left Terzic’s future open and said that the decision rests in the coach’s hands. In an interview with ARD, the Borussia Dortmund CEO said:
"“Edin has the key in his hand. He signed a long-term extension to his contract a few weeks ago, with a clear understanding of how things will continue. He is a Dortmund boy, he feels the club, he breathes the club. If he wants to do something else, then we’ll talk to him.”"
Terzic is attracting interest from a number of clubs in the Bundesliga, with Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfL Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen all reportedly keen on appointing him as head coach. He is currently expected to stay on at Borussia Dortmund next season as part of Marco Rose’s coaching staff.
Watzke also heaped praise on Terzic and said that he has done an excellent job since taking over as head coach in December.
"“I do believe that he would like to stay at BVB,” Watzke said. “When he took over the team in December, it was half dead. And he brought it to life, that’s a huge achievement at his first coaching station.”"
Terzic was appointed Borussia Dortmund head coach until the end of the season in December following Lucien Favre’s sacking. After a difficult start, he has turned the tide brilliantly. He won his first trophy as head coach on Thursday, and also helped Dortmund reach the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. The Black and Yellows have also put themselves in a good position to finish the Bundesliga season in the top four.
It still remains to be seen what the future holds for Edin Terzic beyond the end of the season. He did not want to get drawn into talk about his future on Thursday. But there is no doubt that interest in him will only intensify following Borussia Dortmund’s DFB-Pokal win.
