Borussia Dortmund have extended the contract of U-23s head coach Enrico Maaßen. The 37 year old’s new deal will keep him at the club until 2024.

Enrico Maaßen joined Borussia Dortmund on a two year contract last summer, and he has already made a big impact at the club. Under his charge, the BVB U-23s are fighting for promotion to the third division of German football. The young Black and Yellows are currently two points behind league leaders Rot-Weiss Essen in the Regionalliga West standings, but do have two games in hand on their promotion rivals.

Maaßen has attracted the interest of a number of clubs in the 2. Bundesliga in recent weeks. SC Paderborn, SV Darmstadt 98 and Hannover 96 were all reportedly interested in appointing him as head coach. But now he will stay on with Borussia Dortmund II.

Borussia Dortmund head of licensed players department Sebastian Kehl heaped praise on Maaßen and added that he has great potential for the future.

"“Even at a young age, Enrico Maaßen is already a very good coach on both a professional and personal level, who identifies fully with our club. Enno stands for intense, passionate attacking football with lots of pressing. He has great potential for the future.”“We are therefore very pleased that he has decided to continue his successful work at BVB and also to further his own development in our performance-oriented environment – hopefully in the third division from the new season.”"

While Maaßen said that he feels right at home at Borussia Dortmund.

"“I am proud and happy to be able to work at Borussia Dortmund in the long term. I was very warmly accepted into the BVB family a year ago and feel very much at home here. I know how fortunate I am to enjoy the support and appreciation that I get here and I am delighted that our collaboration is going so successfully.”"

Maaßen will now set his sights on earning promotion to the third division with the Borussia Dortmund U-23s. Numerous players of the squad had to undergo a 14-day quarantine after two COVID-19 cases in the team. But they will be back in action this weekend as they go up against SV Straelen on Sunday. The U-23s still have five games left to play this season. Only the team that finishes first in the Regionalliga West standings will be promoted to the third division.
