Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel is closing in on his return to action. And he could make his comeback during Belgium’s Euro 2020 group stage game against Denmark.
Axel Witsel suffered a torn achilles tendon during Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga clash against RB Leipzig in January, and has been out of action since. But after months of rehab, he is finally on the verge of making his comeback from injury.
Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez has revealed that the Borussia Dortmund midfielder is ahead of schedule in his recovery, and he could be involved in the game against Denmark on Thursday.
"“When I selected Axel, it was with the belief that he would be able to play some minutes against Finland. But he is so far ahead of schedule that he can already play against Denmark.”"
Witsel’s return to the squad will no doubt be a huge boost for Belgium, who are aiming to win the European Championships this summer. The Red Devils began their Euro 2020 campaign with a dominant 3-0 win over Russia on Saturday. Borussia Dortmund right-back Thomas Meunier scored one goal and assisted another in that game, while Thorgan Hazard also impressed at left wing-back.
Witsel’s return from injury is also great news for Borussia Dortmund, who are planning with the influential midfielder for next season. The 32 year old was a crucial player for the Black and Yellows before suffering his injury in January. And he will have an important role to play in the BVB midfield next season.
Borussia Dortmund have been in close contact with the Belgium national team regarding Witsel’s health. And new head coach Marco Rose will be hoping to have him fully fit in time for the start of the new season.
