A variety of rumors surround the future of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt this summer, with the most recent being a link to Serie A side S.S. Lazio.

Julian Brandt has been a bit of an enigma since his transfer to Borussia Dortmund in 2019. The playmaker joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen as one of the most talented midfielders in the Bundesliga. It almost seemed like a fanciful signing at the time. I for one was pretty shocked the club had managed to pull it off for a fee of around 25 million euros.

Since signing however, Brandt has only shown flashes of the talent that made him such a sought after player during his Leverkusen days. There are days when he can be absolutely magnificent, launching attacks and expressing himself on the pitch with a level of creativity where he makes everything easy. There are other days which are less magnificent, with Brandt looking a shadow of his former self, misplacing passes and losing possession all too easily.

These performances have led to reports that have made it seem like he is on his way out of the Westfalenstadion, with the latest such report linking him to S.S. Lazio in Serie A. Incoming manager Maurizio Sarri has allegedly set his sights on Brandt as a player that could help him at Lazio. Sarri has also seemingly decided to target Eintracht Frankfurt’s Filip Kostić for a potential move as well.

Corriere dello Sport seem to suggest that Sarri would like to add at least one attacker to the squad, and may go for two should forward Joaquín Correa depart the club. Alternative reports by SportBild have suggested that new Borussia Dortmund head coach Marco Rose sees a place for Brandt in his team and is convinced that he can play a significant role next season.

While reports from earlier this year have suggested that Dortmund would be open to selling Brandt for 25 million Euros, I for one am in favor of seeing just what Rose can do to help rebuild Brandt’s confidence because his talent, despite his performances, is undeniable. A fresh start under Rose could lead to Brandt once again blossoming into the stunning midfielder we were all so excited about in 2019.
