Borussia Dortmund could look to sign a new central defender this summer, but it is not very high on their list of priorities at the moment.

This is being reported by Kicker, who add that a decision on whether or not a new centre-back will be signed this summer will only become clear over the next month.

There are still question marks over the fitness of two Borussia Dortmund central defenders. Soumaila Coulibaly, who is joining the Black and Yellows from Paris St. Germain, is currently recovering from a torn cruciate ligament injury. Ruhr Nachrichten reported earlier this week that the 17 year old is not expected to return until the autumn period.

Dan-Axel Zagadou is also on the comeback trail after undergoing knee surgery in March. The Frenchman is on the comeback trail, but will likely miss the first phase of Borussia Dortmund’s pre-season. Zagadou was limited to only 13 appearances in the recently concluded season, and has endured a difficult time with injuries in recent yeas.

Mats Hummels and Manuel Akanji are the only other natural central defenders in the Borussia Dortmund ranks. While Emre Can was asked to fill in at centre-back on a number of occasions last season. All three players have qualified for the Euro 2020 round of 16, and will miss at least the first part of pre-season training as a result.

It is quite possible that new head coach Marco Rose will not be able to work with any of the Borussia Dortmund central defenders until the Bad Ragaz training camp, which gets underway on July 23.
