Denmark are through to the Euro 2020 quarterfinals after cruising to a 4-0 win over Wales in their round of 16 clash at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam.
Denmark’s Euro 2020 journey so far has been one of incredible resolve, courage and inspiration. And they continued their remarkable campaign on Saturday evening by earning an impressive 4-0 win over Wales in the round of 16.
Wales were arguably the better team out of the blocks, but it was Denmark who took the lead mid-way through the first half thanks to Kasper Dolberg’s excellent curling effort.
Dolberg then took advantage of some poor defending from Wales to double Denmark’s lead early in the second half. Wales never really recovered from that blow, and the Danes then showed their ruthless streak late on to seal a thumping win. Joakim Maehle made it 3-0 in the 88th minute, before Martin Braithwaite added a fourth deep in stoppage time.
It was a well deserved win for Denmark, who were the better team and stifled the Wales attack for large parts of the game. It was an evening to forget for Gareth Bale and co, who also had Harry Wilson sent off late on. Denmark suffered a couple of injury blows in the second half, as both Thomas Delaney and Simon Kjær were forced off after picking up knocks. But they will not be worrying too much about that right now.
Denmark will now head to Baku to face the winners of Sunday’s round of 16 clash between the Netherlands and Czech Republic in the Euro 2020 quarterfinals next weekend.
