Borussia Dortmund right back Mateu Morey could be sidelined for the entirety of the 2021-22 season, according to a report from BILD.

Mateu Morey injured his lateral collateral, capsular and anterior cruciate ligaments in May when Borussia Dortmund faced Holstein Kiel in the DFB-Pokal semi-final. The Spaniard has already undergone two surgeries since then. And he is expected to be out for quite a while.

According to BILD, there are fears at Borussia Dortmund that Morey could even miss the entire 2021/22 season. An intensive rehab in his home country of Spain awaits him; a recovery that could take up to a year.

Sporting Director Michael Zorc told BILD that the club is prepared to give Morey all the time that he needs to return to full fitness. “We will build Mateu back up carefully and give him all the time he needs to recover completely,” Zorc said.

The tabloid also adds that the Black and Yellows have promised Morey that he will not fall down the pecking order at right back due to his injury. And they will even refrain from bringing a new right back this summer.

Morey’s injury means that Thomas Meunier will be the first choice right-back next season. His form for Borussia Dortmund last season left much to be desired, and even though his performances for Belgium have been impressive, the club would be playing a dangerous game staking everything on Meunier in that position. BVB also have Felix Passlack who can play in the position, and Emre Can is capable of deputising when need be.

We’ve seen just how much Borussia Dortmund struggled due to a lack of depth at centre-back last season. Hopefully, the depth at right-back will be enough to help the team battle in all three competitions this season.
