Number Five: vs RB Leipzig (Bundesliga 20/21 season)

Jadon Sancho’s performance against Leipzig was not only a fine attacking display, it came at a crucial time in the season against the Bundesliga’s best defence. Borussia Dortmund came into this game in fifth place, with just three games left to play in the season to get back into the Champions League spots. To make matters worse, Erling Haaland was sidelined with an injury.

Borussia Dortmund went into the break a goal ahead after Marco Reus’s opener. Early on in the second half, Sancho doubled that lead. After Raphael Guerreiro drew in three defenders, he found Sancho in open space on the edge of the box. Sancho took the space, cut past Lukas Klostermann and calmly curled the ball into the net through a sea of Leipzig defenders.

RB Leipzig came back into the game and managed to get back on level terms. As Leipzig looked for a winning goal, their defence was caught out of position and Julian Brandt found Sancho with a long ball in behind the back line. Instead of opting for a footrace, he drew Amadou Haidara and Dayot Upamecano in before back heeling it into the path of Guerreiro for a give-and-go before tapping home his second into an empty net.

The win put Borussia Dortmund back into the top four. In the end they qualified for the Champions League with a game to spare, but at the time it was a massive win and also saw Dortmund go into the cup final with all the momentum.
