Borussia Dortmund II begin 3. Liga campaign with come from behind win over Zwickau
Borussia Dortmund II came from a goal down to earn an impressive 2-1 win in their 3. Liga opener against FSV Zwickau on Saturday.
Borussia Dortmund II began their 3. Liga campaign with a tough away game against FSV Zwickau in front of 4,500 supporters at the GGZ Arena. Enrico Maaßen’s side could not have wished for a worse possible start, as they fell a goal behind just three minutes into the game. Veteran striker Ronny König opened the scoring for Zwickau, and it looked like the newly promoted BVB U-23s could be in for a long afternoon.
But what followed was a show of incredible grit and desire from the young Black and Yellows. Immanuel Pherai struck home the equaliser on the rebound in the 12th minute after being played through by Richmond Tachie. Both teams had chances to take the lead going into the break, but neither was able to convert.
Zwickau came out of the blocks quickly in the second half. But their dominance allowed Borussia Dortmund II to find a number of opportunities on the counter attack. Tobias Raschl made one such opportunity count as he fired home a volley from the edge of the box after his initial shot was blocked by a Zwickau defender.
Borussia Dortmund II defended with great resolve after taking the lead. But their hopes of getting a priceless opening day win suffered a blow in the 76th minute, when Niklas Dams was shown a straight red card.
The sending off gave Zwickau a big boost, and they threw everything they had at the BVB goal in the closing stages of the game. But Luca Unbehaun made several important saves, including a spectacular diving stop in the 95th minute, to ensure that his team got the three points.
It was a dream start to Borussia Dortmund II’s 3. Liga campaign. What makes this result even better is the fact that they were without key centre-backs Lennard Maloney, Antonios Papadopoulos and Albin Thaqi. If Enrico Maaßen’s side keep playing like this, they can make a few waves in the 3. Liga this season.
