Dan-Axel Zagadou has less than one year left on his current Borussia Dortmund contract. And the defender has signalled his desire to stay at the club beyond the end of the season.
Dan-Axel Zagadou’s Borussia Dortmund future remains uncertain with his contract set to expire at the end of the upcoming season. The 22 year old was asked about his future on Monday. While he is not thinking about it at the moment, Zagadou can imagine extending his contract with the Black and Yellows.
"“I know that the contract expires next summer,” Zagadou said. “But my focus and that of the club at the moment is on getting healthy again and completing my rehab in the best way possible.”“Of course I can imagine it. BVB gave me the chance to prove myself as a professional. If the club sees it the same way I do, I would be very happy to stay at Borussia Dortmund.”"
It was reported in March that Borussia Dortmund would like to extend Zagadou’s contract. The defender has been very unlucky with injuries during his time in Germany. But he still has great potential, as he has shown with his performances over the years.
Dan-Axel Zagadou also spoke about the status of his rehab on Monday, and said that he expects to be fully fit again in two to three months. The Frenchman underwent knee surgery in March and is currently working towards getting back to full fitness.
"“I’m doing well and I’m on schedule. I’m glad to be back with the team now that the vacation is over. As far as the injury is concerned, I’ll probably need some more time. I expect to be fit again in two or three months.”"
Borussia Dortmund have signed Soumaila Coulibaly and Abdoulaye Kamara from Zagadou’s former club Paris St. Germain this summer. And Zagadou is doing his best to try and help the duo settle in.
"“I don’t see myself as a big brother to them, rather as a friend. And I try to pass on to them the things I was taught at the beginning when I came here from Paris. It’s important that they settle in here quickly. I try to help them with that. If they have any questions, I’m there for them.”"
With both Coulibaly and Zagadou expected to miss at least the first two months of the season, Borussia Dortmund are reportedly looking to sign a new centre-back this summer. According to Sky Italia, BVB are interested in signing Merih Demiral from Juventus. Dortmund have also been linked with RB Leipzig’s Marcel Halstenberg and Mainz’ Jeremiah St. Juste in recent months.
