Donyell Malen to wear the No. 21 shirt at Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund have announced that Donyell Malen will wear the No.21 shirt following his transfer from PSV Eindhoven.
After months of speculation, Borussia Dortmund finally announced the arrival of Donyell Malen on Tuesday. The Netherlands international joined for a transfer fee of 30 million euros, making him the club’s second most expensive signing of all time. The Black and Yellows have now announced that he will wear the No.21 shirt.
Donyell Malen joins Borussia Dortmund on the back of an excellent season with PSV Eindhoven. The 22 year old scored 27 goals and provided 10 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions for the Dutch side last season.
Malen wore the No.9 shirt at PSV Eindhoven, but Erling Haaland has that number at Borussia Dortmund. So the versatile forward will have the number 21 on his back. The number 21 has previously been worn by the likes of André Schürrle, Oliver Kirch and Christoph Metzelder at Borussia Dortmund. Ilkay Gündogan also wore the No.21 shirt during the 2011/12 season, but switched to the No.8 shirt after that.
Donyell Malen could make his BVB debut against SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round of the DFB-Pokal next weekend.
The shirt numbers for the other new signings have also been confirmed. Gregor Kobel will wear the No.1 shirt, while Soumaila Coulibaly has been given the shirt number 4. And Abdoulaye Kamara will have the number 32 on the back of his shirt.
Borussia Dortmund have also confirmed that Gio Reyna will wear the No.7 shirt following Jadon Sancho’s move to Manchester United. The USMNT international previously had the shirt number 32.
