Borussia Dortmund have signed Donyell Malen for a fee of 30 million euros, with the Netherlands international signing a five year contract with the club.

Borussia Dortmund fans got the news they’d been waiting for on Tuesday as the club announced the signing of PSV forward Donyell Malen. The 22 year old’s contract will see him tied to the Black and Yellows until 2026.

While Borussia Dortmund generally like to get their transfer business done early, the signing of Donyell Malen proved to be a protracted process, be it due to the current COVID environment, or to the simple fact that Mino Raiola is the player’s agent. Despite all the complications, Michael Zorc and co. have managed to get the deal over the line, once again attracting and completing the transfer of an exciting talent to join the club’s attacking ranks.

Malen’s signing comes in the advent of Jadon Sancho’s departure to Manchester United, with the club having set their sights on the Dutchman well before the England international’s departure was made certain. Even though Malen has been brought in to replace Sancho, it is clear from the off that this is not a one to one replacement for the club’s former mercurial winger. Sancho and Malen are two very different players, so it makes sense to take a closer look at the new BVB signing and learn more about him, and in extension just how he might fit in at Dortmund in the season to come.
