Borussia Dortmund right-back Thomas Meunier has tested positive for COVID-19 and is now in self-isolation.

Borussia Dortmund have announced that Thomas Meunier is in quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19. The Belgian international only returned to training last week following his post Euro 2020 break. He returned two negative COVID-19 tests last week, and another before the team’s departure from their training camp in Bad Ragaz on Saturday. But he tested positive earlier this week, and has been in self-isolation ever since.

Meunier testing positive for COVID-19 is another big blow for Borussia Dortmund, who are already set to be without a number of key defenders for the start of the season. Mats Hummels, Raphael Guerreiro, Dan-Axel Zagadou, Soumaila Coulibaly, Nnamdi Collins and Emre Can are all dealing with injuries heading into the new campaign. While Mateu Morey is set to miss the majority of the upcoming season after suffering a serious knee injury in May.

Meunier’s absence means that Felix Passlack will probably start at right-back in the DFB-Pokal first round tie against SV Wehen Wiesbaden this weekend. Passlack played in all four of Borussia Dortmund’s pre-season games and delivered encouraging performances at right-back. At the moment, it remains to be seen if Meunier will be available for next weekend’s Bundesliga opener against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Meunier made 33 appearances across all competitions for Borussia Dortmund last season. The 29 year old is set to be the Black and Yellows’ first-choice right-back this season. And hopefully, we will see him back on the pitch very soon.
