The Borussia Dortmund women’s team will play their first ever game on Sunday, as they go up against TSV 1860 Munich women in a pre-season friendly.
Sunday, August 08, 2021 will be a historic day for Borussia Dortmund as the club’s women’s football team will play their first ever game. The Black and Yellows will go up against TSV 1860 Munich in their first pre-season friendly ahead of the new season. The game will take place at the Stadion Rote Erde in Dortmund, with 1300 supporters set to cheer the team on. Tickets have already been sold out for the game.
The game against TSV 1860 Munich will no doubt be a special and memorable occasion for Borussia Dortmund. The club announced their plans to establish a women’s team in September 2020. And after months of hard work, they are ready to get on the pitch for their first ever game.
The Borussia Dortmund women’s team will be trained by former SV Berghofen head coach Thomas Sulewski. Svenja Schlenker is the head of department for women’s football, while World Cup winner and Olympic Gold Medalist Annike Krahn is also on board as a consultant.
"Svenja Schlenker said ahead of the game, “It fills me with pride, it’s something very special. We’re all incredibly excited and probably won’t sleep too well the night before.”"
The playing squad features a total of 23 players. The players have been training together for two weeks now, and they are absolutely raring to go. Lisa Klemann, who is one of the senior players in the team with experience of playing in higher divisions, said earlier this week that she is looking forward to finally getting started.
"“I’m looking forward to finally getting out on the pitch,” Klemann said. “My goal is to win as many games as possible and ultimately finish at the top. But I’m just as excited to reward myself with beers and bratwurst after winning games and enjoy it all with the other girls.”"
The Borussia Dortmund women’s team will play a total of four pre-season friendlies ahead of the start of the season. They will be competing in the Kreisliga this season, which is the eighth division of German football. The club’s plan is to grow organically and rise up through the divisions in the coming years. And the journey will no doubt be a very exciting one for both the club and the supporters.
