Germany head coach Hansi Flick has praised Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus, calling him “one of the best players in his position.”

Hansi Flick held his first press conference as Germany head coach on Tuesday and spoke about a wide range of topics, including Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus. The former Bayern Munich head coach was full of praise of Reus, and lauded his ability to split defences with his quality in the final third of the pitch.

"“For me, Marco Reus is one of the best players in the final third, someone who has tremendous technique, can make the final pass and open up the opponent’s defence with the way he plays football,” Flick said. “That’s why, for me, he’s one of the best players in his position.”"

Reus was one of Borussia Dortmund’s most consistent performers in the second half of last season as they won the DFB-Pokal and finished in the top four. The 32 year old scored 11 goals and provided 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions for the Black and Yellows last season.

Reus decided not to take part in the European Championships this summer in order to recover and recharge his batteries ahead of the new season. He was able to take part in Borussia Dortmund’s entire pre-season preparation as a result. And now he looks to be in really good shape heading into the new season.

Reus showed his quality during Borussia Dortmund’s 3-0 win over SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round of the DFB-Pokal last weekend. He will now be aiming to continue his form as the new Bundesliga season gets underway this weekend.

Reus has won a total of 44 caps so far for Germany, scoring 13 goals. He could add to that next month if he is included in the Germany squad. Hansi Flick’s side are due to play three World Cup qualifiers in September.
