Borussia Dortmund could be active in the transfer market once again, with reports claiming that they are closing in on the signing of RB Leipzig defender Marcel Halstenberg.
Borussia Dortmund could be about to make their fifth signing of the summer transfer window. Ruhr Nachrichten report that BVB are interested in signing Marcel Halstenberg from RB Leipzig. The two clubs have not reached an agreement on the transfer fee just yet, but a base fee of around ten million euros is being discussed.
Halstenberg has less than one year left on his RB Leipzig contract. The 29 year old has been heavily linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund in recent months. And now it looks like a transfer could go through before next week’s deadline day.
Borussia Dortmund have always maintained that they will only make further signings this summer if players from the current squad can be sold first. And with Thomas Delaney reportedly attracting the interest of Sevilla, the Black and Yellows could use the money they receive for him to sign Halstenberg.
It has become apparent in recent weeks that Borussia Dortmund need some cover in the defensive positions. And Halstenberg’s versatility would make him well suited to get the job done. He is primarily a left-back, but can also play as a centre-back both in a back three and back four.
Halstenberg is also a boyhood Borussia Dortmund fan, and made 68 appearances for the club’s second team before joining St. Pauli in 2013. He then moved to RB Leipzig two years later, and has made a total of 185 appearances for last season’s Bundesliga runners-up.
