Borussia Dortmund target Marcel Halstenberg’s transfer can only come to fruition should the club sell Nico Schulz to make room for him, according to WAZ.

While the departure of Jadon Sancho and the potential acquisitions of PSV duo Donyell Malen and Noni Madueke have dominated much of the transfer window limelight surrounding Borussia Dortmund so far this summer, another potentially interesting transfer has been brewing in the wings. Marcel Halstenberg has been linked with Borussia Dortmund as a player new head coach Marco Rose would like to sign.

Initial reports have indicated that there is a disparity between the valuation Dortmund and RB Leipzig are willing to settle on, with the clubs seemingly a few million euros apart in what they are willing to accept for the deal. With Halstenberg’s contract running out next summer, it has even been suggested that the player is willing to sign a pre-contract to join in the summer of 2022.

Initial reports have also suggested that RB Leipzig would only intend on letting Halstenberg go this summer if they are able to secure the signing of Maxcence Lacroix, who has also been a reported target of the Black and Yellows. New reports provided by WAZ have now indicated that  an additional stipulation to the deal coming to fruition would be the departure of Nico Schulz.

Long rumored to have the club’s blessing to look for pastures new, the departure of Nico Schulz would be critical so that Dortmund could make room in the squad for Halstenberg, who previously plied his trade for BVB II between 2011 and 2013.

In the event that Borussia Dortmund are able to move Schulz on to another club, the signing of Halstenberg would be a shrewd piece of business as he would make quite the squad player. Capable of paying both left-back and centre-back, Halstenberg would offer Rose more tactical flexibility, as well as more defensive cover, something Dortmund have lacked in seasons past.
