Michael Zorc: Borussia Dortmund squad in a good position after the transfer window

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc believes that the squad is in a ‘very good position’ after the summer transfer window.
Borussia Dortmund did not make too many changes to their squad in the summer transfer window, but still managed to bring in five new players. Gregor Kobel, Donyell Malen, Marin Pongracic, Soumaila Coulibaly and Abdoulaye Kamara all joined BVB this summer. While Jadon Sancho and Thomas Delaney were the two most notable names to depart.
Michael Zorc spoke about Borussia Dortmund’s transfer window in an interview with Sky on Tuesday. While the club’s spending this summer was impacted by the financial losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Zorc sees the squad in a very good position going into the rest of the season.
"“This year, of course, the market was particularly difficult because the effects of the Corona pandemic were really felt and many things could not be implemented until something happened on the departure side,” Zorc told Sky (H/T: Ruhr Nachrichten).“It was foreseeable that Sancho would leave us this summer. With Donyell Malen, we have signed our desired player. We’ve changed in the goalkeeper position and we’ve now reacted once again in the defensive area, reacted also in response to our injury situation and I think we’re in a very good position.”"
Borussia Dortmund had a chaotic end to the transfer window, as loan moves for Callum Hudson-Odoi and Diogo Dalot failed to materialise. But BVB did make one signing on transfer deadline day. Marin Pongracic arrived on a season long loan deal from Wolfsburg. And Zorc believes that the defender can help the team this season.
"“He’s a young centre back, only 23, who is physically robust and fast, and is also decent in the build-up play. I believe that he is not yet at the end of his development and that he can help us.”“I think it’s always important that the coach, knows the player you want to sign. And also vice versa.”"
Zorc also spoke about Roman Bürki, who failed to complete a move away from Borussia Dortmund this summer. Bürki was free to leave BVB on a cut-price fee following the arrival of Gregor Kobel. But the Black and Yellows did not receive any bids for him.
"“With the Kobel signing, Roman decided that he was looking for a new challenge. That didn’t work out for the reasons we’ve been discussing here. But Roman has not stolen any golden spoons here, he was the number one for years.”"
Bürki still has two years left on his Borussia Dortmund contract. He will now stay at the club at least until January, when the transfer window reopens.
