Borussia Dortmund internationals: Witsel scores for Belgium, Reus makes Germany comeback
By Tushar Bahl
Three Borussia Dortmund players were in action for their respective national teams on Thursday. And they all enjoyed fairly comfortable wins.
The international break continued on Thursday, with teams taking part in qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Marco Reus, Axel Witsel and Youssoufa Moukoko all recorded memorable wins.
Axel Witsel played 90 minutes for Belgium and helped them earn a come from behind 5-2 win over Estonia. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder got on the scoresheet in the 65th minute with a simple tap in. Romelu Lukaku, Hans Vanaken and Thomas Foket were also on target for the Red Devils. Thomas Meunier was not included in the Belgium squad for the game.
Marco Reus made his first Germany appearance since 2019 as they earned a 2-0 win over Liechtenstein. Goals from Timo Werner and Leroy Sané helped Germany kick-off the Hansi Flick era with a straightforward victory. Reus came close to scoring in the 73rd minute, but he hit the side netting with his first time effort from a corner. He also took over the captain’s armband from Joshua Kimmich after the latter came off with ten minutes to go in the game. Mahmoud Dahoud was an unused substitute for Germany.
Youssoufa Moukoko made history as he became the youngest player to ever play and score for the Germany U-21s. The Borussia Dortmund striker scored a brace as Germany U-21s beat San Marino 6-0 in their first Euro U-21 qualifier.
Jude Bellingham was an unused substitute as England cruised to a 4-0 win over Hungary. Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, Harry Maguire and Declan Rice were on target for the Three Lions.
