Two goals in six second half minutes saw Borussia Dortmund II suffer a 2-0 defeat at home to 3. Liga leaders FC Magdeburg.
Borussia Dortmund II faced the biggest test of their season so far on Saturday, as they went up against the in-form FC Magdeburg. Led by former HSV head coach Christian Titz, Magdeburg have made an excellent start to the season and went into the game sitting pretty at the top of the 3. Liga standings.
Magdeburg are the team to beat the team to beat in the 3. Liga at the moment, and they showed exactly why on Saturday. They dominated the game right from the start and forced a goal-line clearance in just the second minute.
Borussia Dortmund II managed to keep Magdeburg at bay in the first half. But they were finally beaten in the 50th minute. Jan-Luca Schuler was played through on goal and he kept his composure to chip the ball past Stefan Drljaca and into the back of the net. Magdeburg doubled their lead just six minutes later, as Barış Atik’s free-kick from the left wing somehow found its way into the top corner.
Suddenly facing a two goal deficit, Borussia Dortmund II worked hard to get back into the contest. But in the end, Magdeburg proved to be just too strong for them. Enrico Maaßen’s side suffered their first defeat at home since November 2020, but they still find themselves in third place in the 3. Liga standings.
Next up for Borussia Dortmund II is a trip to SV Wehen Wiesbaden, who the first-team defeated in the first round of the DFB-Pokal last month.
