Mats Hummels made history on Saturday as he became just the fifth player to record 400 competitive appearances for Borussia Dortmund.

Mats Hummels made his 400th appearance for Borussia Dortmund during their 4-3 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Saturday. He became only the fifth player to reach this historic feat for Der BVB.

Only four players in the history of Borussia Dortmund have made more competitive appearances than Mats Hummels. Former BVB midfielder and current sporting director Michael Zorc leads the way with 571 appearances. He is followed by Roman Weidenfeller, who played in 453 games for the Black and Yellows. Stefan Reuter is third on the list with 421 appearances to his name. While Lars Ricken is fourth, having made 407 appearances.

While Hummels is still a long way away from Michael Zorc’s record, he can certainly overtake Lars Ricken and Stefan Reuter this season. And with Borussia Dortmund planning to extend his contract, the centre-back will fancy his chances of catching Roman Weidenfeller as well.

291 of Hummels’ 400 appearances for Borussia Dortmund have come in the Bundesliga, 44 have come in the UEFA Champions League, and 38 have come in the DFB-Pokal.

Hummels made his Borussia Dortmund debut in January 2008 after joining from Bayern Munich. He quickly established himself as an important player in the team and played a key role in helping the Black and Yellows win back to back Bundesliga titles in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons. The defender did join Bayern Munich in 2016, but made his return to BVB three years later. And he has been one of the team’s most consistent performers ever since.
