Bundesliga Roundup: Borussia Dortmund win thriller, Bayern thrash Leipzig
Matchday four of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season saw Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich earn crucial wins. While Wolfsburg maintained their lead at the top of the table.
Fans were treated to another weekend filled with goals and dramatic matches on matchday four of the Bundesliga season. And it all started with Borussia Dortmund’s topspiel against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. The Black and Yellows came from behind three times before earning a stunning 4-3 win.
Bayer Leverkusen took the lead on three occasions, with Florian Wirtz, Patrik Schick and Moussa Diaby all finding the back of the net. But Borussia Dortmund showed great fighting spirit to get back on level terms thrice, through Erling Haaland, Julian Brandt and Raphael Guerreiro. And Haaland then sealed the 4-3 win in the 77th minute from the penalty spot.
Bayern Munich continued their ruthless streak on Saturday evening with a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig. Robert Lewandowski, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sane and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting were all on target for Bayern, while Konrad Laimer’s thumping effort from 35 yards for Leipzig proved to be in vain.
But it is Wolfsburg who hold a two point lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings. Mark van Bommel’s side continued their excellent start to the season with a 2-0 win over SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Lukas Nmecha opened the scoring in the 10th minute, before Wout Weghorst sealed the three points in stoppage time.
Mainz 05 are up to fourth place in the Bundesliga standings following their 2-0 win over TSG Hoffenheim. Jonathan Burkardt and Marcus Ingvartsen scored for the 05ers as they made it three wins out of four.
Borussia Mönchengladbach earned their first league win of the season, as they beat Arminia Bielefeld 3-1 on Sunday. Lars Stindl scored a brace for the Foals, before Denis Zakaria sealed the three points 18 minutes from time. Masaya Okugawa had earlier equalised for Arminia in first half stoppage time, but Gladbach enjoyed a fairly comfortable win in the end.
There was late drama at the Dreisamstadion, as SC Freiburg rescued a 1-1 draw against FC Köln. The Billy Goats took the lead in the first half through Anthony Modeste, but had Florian Kainz sent off in the 74th minute. The sending off gave Christian Streich’s side the chance to get back into the game, and they found their equaliser in the 89th minute courtesy of an own goal from Rafael Czichos.
Eintracht Frankfurt are still searching for their first league win of the season after being held to a 1-1 draw by VfB Stuttgart on Sunday. Filip Kostic thought he had won it for the Eagles with his goal in the 79th minute, but Omar Marmoush scored two minutes from time to ensure a share of the spoils.
Hertha Berlin finally opened their account for the season, as they beat VfL Bochum 3-1. Suat Serdar’s brace gave Hertha a vital cushion going into the break. Simon Zoller halved the deficit for Bochum at the hour mark, but Myziane Maolida scored 12 minutes from time to seal the win for the Berliners.
Union Berlin and Augsburg played out a goalless draw on Saturday, with both goalkeepers making some fine saves.
