Axel Witsel: “I’m here to help the young players on and off the pitch”
By Tushar Bahl
Axel Witsel wants to help and guide the Borussia Dortmund youngsters and set an example for them both on and off the pitch.
Axel Witsel’s 2021 got off to the worst possible start as he suffered a torn achilles tendon in January. The injury was expected to rule him out of the European Championships, but he got fit in time for the tournament through sheer will and determination. Now back in the Borussia Dortmund squad, the Belgian international continues to be a key player for the Black and Yellows under Marco Rose. And he wants to use his experience to help both the team and the youngsters.
Asked about the many young players in the Borussia Dortmund squad and his relationship with them, Witsel told BVB.de:
"“I have a good connection with the other players, for example with Jude, he’s a really talented kid. One day he’ll be one of the best players in his position. He’s a good listener, I think that’s very important. I’m here to help him and the other young players, on and off the pitch. That’s just as true for Marco or Mats, who also do the same.”"
Witsel also spoke about his role in Marco Rose’s system, and whether he will have to change his style of play to fit into the new coach’s plans.
"“The coach has very good ideas, and he has also changed the system. We now play with a diamond in midfield. Rose demands a lot from us. I think that’s good for us.”“I’ve had a lot of coaches in my career. And none of them have hated me (laughs). It’s not difficult for me to adapt to a different style. If Rose wants to press more, then we press more.”"
There is a lot of competition for places at Borussia Dortmund, especially in midfield. But Witsel sees this as a good thing, as it helps get the best out of every player both on the training ground and in matches.
"“Most of the guys in our team are very talented, but they are still very young. I think it’s good that there’s this competition. It pushes us all to give everything in training and in the games.”"
Witsel has featured in all eight of Borussia Dortmund’s games so far this season. But he faces an uncertain future at the club, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current season. The 32 year old does not know yet what the future holds for him, but he wants to keep playing for at least another four years.
