Borussia Dortmund head coach Marco Rose has spoken out about striker Donyell Malen’s form so far, emphasizing that the club must be patient with the player.

Donyell Malen’s start to life at Borussia Dortmund has been a slow one so far. The Dutchman arrived at the Westfalenstadion to much acclaim, having scored 27 goals and assisted a further 7 last season in the Eredivisie with PSV Eindhoven.

Since arriving in Dortmund, Malen has yet to register a goal or assist for the club in a competitive match, which at face value, is a slightly worrying fact to take in. Dortmund brought in Malen as an indirect replacement for one Jadon Sancho, which considering Sancho’s exploits with the club is no small feat to accomplish.

In the defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Malen shared the spot up top with teenage striker Youssoufa Moukoko, forming a strike partnership of much interest to those who follow the club as it looked to be a glimpse of what might be Dortmund’s favored frontline in a few years time. Their showing was lackluster, albeit proving to be merely a symptom of an overall defective team performance. The result? Malen has now gone 6 league games without a league goal for Die Schwarzgelben.

Marco Rose is not too worried about Malen, however. Rose was clear in the press conference leading up to tomorrow’s Champions League  clash with Sporting Lisbon that the Black and Yellows should still be patient when it comes to Malen’s form:

"“Donyell Malen has to stay positive and pick up where he started. He had a big physical deficit at first, and we have been working on that. With Donny, we have to be patient, but of course we also need him to take responsibility up front. And then hopefully it will work out soon with a goal.”"

Rose’s approach to Malen has to be taken as a fair one. Despite his exploits in the Eredivisie, the player still seems to need time to adjust to the intensity of the Bundesliga. As he continues to play with his teammates, he will grow in confidence, but the first goal will be critical for him to really get going. Malen will have ample opportunity in the coming days as Dortmund face Sporting in the Champions League on Tuesday and Augsburg this coming Saturday in the Bundesliga. Both matches could provide that crucial moment for Malen to finally make his mark for the club.
