Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Mahmoud Dahoud strained a ligament in his left knee during Tuesday’s Champions League group stage game against Sporting CP.

Borussia Dortmund suffered another injury blow on Tuesday evening as Mahmoud Dahoud had to be subbed off after suffering a knee injury less than five minutes into their UEFA Champions League group stage clash against Sporting CP. Now the club has confirmed that the midfielder has strained a ligament in his left knee.

Borussia Dortmund did not reveal how long Dahoud will be out for. But the fact that it is not a ligament tear means that the 25 year old has avoided a serious injury.

Dahoud is suspended for Saturday’s Bundesliga game against FC Augsburg anyways after receiving a red card against Borussia Mönchengladbach last weekend. And with the international break set to follow this weekend’s game, he can use the next two weeks to recover and get back to full fitness.

Dahoud has started all ten of Borussia Dortmund’s games so far this season. He has established himself as a key player for Marco Rose’s side. And the hope will be that he can return to action before long.

Emre Can is also closing in on his return to action. The versatile midfielder has had to deal with a number of muscle injuries over the last couple of months and has made just one appearance so far this season. He finally made his return to team training on Monday and could be on the bench against FC Augsburg this weekend.
