DFB-Pokal roundup: Upsets aplenty as Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke are knocked out

The second round of the DFB-Pokal was full of upsets as Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04 were all knocked out in stunning fashion. 

A number of big names fell at the second hurdle in the DFB-Pokal this week, as we were treated to some thrilling matches and plenty of edge of the seats action. Two big upsets came on Wednesday evening, as Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen were both knocked out of the competition. While Schalke were sent packing by third division side 1860 Munich on Tuesday.

Bayern Munich suffered a shock 5-0 defeat away to Borussia Mönchengladbach, with Adi Hütter’s side producing an incredible performance to knock out the favourites to win the competition. Gladbach raced to a three goal lead in the first half, before Breel Embolo’s second half brace handed Bayern their worst ever defeat in the DFB-Pokal.

Bayer Leverkusen were also left stunned as they lost 2-1 at home to second division side Karlsruher SC.

Defending DFB-Pokal champions Borussia Dortmund were made to work hard but got the job done in the end against Ingolstadt courtesy of a second half brace from Thorgan Hazard. Also through to the round of 16 after a hard fought win are RB Leipzig. They defeated Regionalliga side SV Babelsberg 1-0.

Union Berlin survived a scare against third division side SV Waldhof Mannheim, as they came from behind to secure a 3-1 win in extra time. While Hertha BSC saw off the challenge of SC Preußen Münster, earning a 3-1 win over the Regionalliga side.

TSG Hoffenheim secured a thumping 5-1 win over last season’s semi-finalists Holstein Kiel. And Mainz 05 booked their ticket in the round of 16 with a 3-2 win over Arminia Bielefeld after extra time. Freiburg needed penalties to get the better of VfL Osnabrück. The third division side had earlier taken the lead in extra time, before a 120th minute equaliser helped Christian Streich’s side maintain their unbeaten start to the season. While FC Köln continued their fine run of form by earning a 2-0 win over Stuttgart.

Schalke’s misery continued on Tuesday as they were knocked out of the DFB-Pokal after suffering a 1-0 defeat to third division side 1860 Munich. 2. Bundesliga table toppers St. Pauli needed extra time to claim a 3-2 win over Dynamo Dresden. Their arch-rivals Hamburger SV are also through to the round of 16 after beating FC Nürnberg on penalties.

Hansa Rostock got the better of SSV Jahn Regensburg after a penalty shootout that followed a thrilling 3-3 draw between the two teams. Fans were also treated to a penalty shootout in Bochum, as the newly promoted side edged past Augsburg after the two sides played out a 2-2 draw. While Hannover 96 enjoyed a 3-0 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf.
