Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said earlier this week that Bayern Munich can start dusting off the Bundesliga trophy following Borussia Dortmund’s defeat to RB Leipzig. Now Hans-Joachim Watzke has responded.

Bayern Munich opened up a four point lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings this past weekend after Borussia Dortmund suffered a 2-1 defeat to RB Leipzig. The Bundesliga season is still only 11 games old, but that did not stop former Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge from claiming that the defending champions can start dusting off the Bundesliga trophy. Now Hans-Joachim Watzke has responded to Rummenigge’s comments.

"In an interview with Ruhr Nachrichten, the Borussia Dortmund CEO said:“Bayern are welcome to say what they want. We think differently. After Bayern’s 0-5 loss in the cup, I didn’t hear anyone from Dortmund say that we’re already polishing the cup or something like that.”"

There are still 23 games left to play in the Bundesliga season. And while Bayern Munich are no doubt the favourites to win the Bundesliga title, there is still plenty of time for Borussia Dortmund to cut the four point deficit. The two title rivals will face off for the first time in the Bundesliga this season on December 04 at the Signal Iduna Park.

Watzke also gave his verdict on Borussia Dortmund’s start to the season and said that they have a done a decent job of overcoming the challenges they have faced so far this season. The Black and Yellows have had to deal with a lot of injury problems this season, which have undoubtedly impacted the progress they have made under Marco Rose.

"“We’ve managed to defy the problems up to this point. The results in the league and the cup are fine. In the Champions League, we are one point short. But overall, it’s not bad – and we have everything in our own hands.”"
