Borussia Dortmund internationals: Jude Bellingham, Manuel Akanji, Gregor Kobel book World Cup spots
Jude Bellingham played 90 minutes for England as they qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a 10-0 win over San Marino on Monday. While Switzerland pipped Italy to book their World Cup ticket.
The final round of matches in the European qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup continued on Monday, and it was a successful evening for the Borussia Dortmund players. Jude Bellingham started for England as they hit ten goals past San Marino to seal their spot at next year’s tournament in Qatar.
Bellingham had the ball in the net for what he thought was his first ever goal for England. But his celebrations were cut short by VAR as the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up. Still, it was an impressive performance from the Borussia Dortmund midfielder on his tenth appearance for the England national team.
Harry Kane scored four of England’s ten goals, and Harry Maguire, Emile Smith Rowe, Tyrone Mings, Tammy Abraham and Bukayo Saka were also on target for the Three Lions.
Switzerland also qualified for the World Cup with a stunning 4-0 win over Bulgaria on Monday. The win helped them overtake Italy and go top in Group C. The Euro 2020 winners were held to a goalless draw by Northern Ireland, and they will now have to go through the play-offs if they want to qualify for the World Cup.
Switzerland were without Manuel Akanji (suspension) and Gregor Kobel (hip injury) on Monday evening. But the Borussia Dortmund duo will in all likelihood be in their squad for next year’s tournament.
