Former Bayern Munich player Dietmar Hamann does not think that Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus deserves to be in the Germany squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Marco Reus has two goals and four assists in his last four appearances for the German national team. But former Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder Dietmar Hamann does not think that the Borussia Dortmund captain should be included in the Germany squad for next year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Hamann believes that Reus’ decision to skip the European Championships last summer means that he should not be considered for Germany selection again.

"“He skipped the European Championships in the summer because he didn’t feel fit,” Hamann said on Sky Sport. “But before that, he played his best football when he won the Cup with Dortmund. After that, he stands up and says he needs a break and can’t play the tournament.”“For me it’s clear: if you decide to pull out of a tournament by choice, that’s the end of your career as a national team player. We could have used him at the European Championships. I can imagine that some players will say: ‘You let us down’.”"

Reus decided not to take part in the Euros last summer in order to give his body some time to recover after a long season with Borussia Dortmund. The break allowed Reus to recharge his batteries and be available for Dortmund’s entire pre-season preparation. As a result, he has been able to play at the top level for both club and country so far this season.

Hansi Flick, who took over as Germany head coach after the European Championships, has clearly shown that he does not share Hamann’s views. The former Bayern Munich head coach has selected Marco Reus in every squad he has picked so far. And he also said in August that the 32 year old is one of the best players in his position.

Hamann did not name any Borussia Dortmund players in his preferred squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, including Mats Hummels, who he thinks is too slow.
