Dan-Axel Zagadou has suffered a minor setback on his road to getting back to full fitness, with a muscle strain preventing him from making progress during the international break.

Dan-Axel Zagadou made his return from injury just before the international break, as he came on as a late substitute during Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 defeat to RB Leipzig. The defender was aiming to make more progress on his recovery during the international break, but a muscle strain in his thigh prevented him from doing so.

This is being reported by Ruhr Nachrichten, who add that the muscle strain is not thought to be serious. And there is even a chance that he could be in the squad for Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga clash against VfB Stuttgart this weekend.

But the setback still comes at an inopportune time for Zagadou, who will be looking to get back to full fitness as soon as possible so he can bolster Borussia Dortmund’s defensive options. The 22 year old was set to play in a friendly match during the international break, but the thigh strain suffered during a training session prevented him from taking part.

Zagadou, who has endured a difficult two year spell due to various injury problems, had been sidelined since March with a knee injury before he made his return earlier this month.

Zagadou’s Borussia Dortmund contract expires at the end of the season, and the BVB bosses will have a decision to make about his future before long. The defender is rated very highly at the club. And the hope will be that he can steer clear of injuries in the coming months.
