Bundesliga Roundup: Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen early vital away wins
Borussia Dortmund kept pace with title rivals Bayern Munich, while Bayer Leverkusen earned a vital win over RB Leipzig on matchday 13 of the Bundesliga season.
Erling Haaland marked his return with a goal as Borussia Dortmund delivered one of their best performances of the season in their 3-1 win over Wolfsburg on Saturday. Goals from Emre Can, Donyell Malen and Erling Haaland helped the Black and Yellows turn things around after Wout Weghorst’s early opener.
Borussia Dortmund remain one point behind Bayern Munich ahead of this weekend’s Der Klassiker. The Bavarians claimed a hard fought 1-0 win away to Arminia Bielefeld, courtesy of Leroy Sané’s 71st minute winner.
Bayer Leverkusen moved up to third place in the Bundesliga standings with a 3-1 win away to RB Leipzig. Florian Wirtz, Moussa Diaby and Jeremie Frimpong were on target for Gerardo Seoane’s side, while Andre Silva scored what proved to be a consolation goal for Leipzig.
SC Freiburg suffered their third straight defeat, losing 2-1 to VfL Bochum. Christian Streich’s side took the lead through Philipp Lienhart early in the second half, but goals from Sebastian Polter and Milos Pantovic helped last season’s 2. Bundesliga champions complete an impressive comeback.
TSG Hoffenheim are up to fifth place after earning an impressive 6-3 win over the struggling Greuther Fürth. Ihlas Bebou netted a hat-trick for Hoffenheim, while Georginio Rutter scored a brace.
Matchday 13 was also one to remember for FC Köln, as they cruised to a 4-1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Rhein derby. Second half goals from Dejan Lubicic, Mark Uth, Ondrej Duda and Sebastian Andersson gave the Billy Goats their biggest ever derby win since 1996.
A 95th-minute winner from Evan N’Dicka helped Eintracht Frankfurt claim a 2-1 victory over Union Berlin. Djibril Sow had earlier given the Eagles the lead, before Union Berlin equalised through Max Kruse.
VfB Stuttgart climbed out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win over Mainz 05. Goals from Hiroki Ito and Borna Sosa helped the Swabians claim their first win in six games. A 97th minute equaliser from Michael Gregoritsch helped Augsburg snatch a 1-1 draw away to Hertha Berlin. Pal Dardai paid the price for the result, as he was sacked on Monday.
