Marco Rose hopes Gio Reyna can return to action after the international break
Marco Rose is hoping that Gio Reyna can make his return to the Borussia Dortmund squad after the upcoming international break.
Gio Reyna suffered a muscle injury while on international duty with the United States in September, and has been sidelined ever since. He made his return to team training in late November, and has been slowly working his way back to full fitness. Marco Rose gave an update on the attacking midfielder’s status on Monday ahead of Borussia Dortmund’s DFB-Pokal round of 16 tie against St. Pauli.
The Borussia Dortmund head coach said that Reyna is making good progress in training, and the hope is that he will be fully fit again after the international break.
"“Gio Reyna is on a good path overall. Now we need to improve his performance parameters and get him match fit. We’re on a pretty good track, he’s training well. I hope that after the break after the Hoffenheim game he can finally become an option for us again.”"
When Reyna suffered his injury in September, the expectation was that he would return to action in a month. But there were some complications on his road to recovery and he was forced to miss the rest of the hinrunde as a result.
While Reyna is now closing in on his return, he will miss Borussia Dortmund’s games against FC St. Pauli and TSG Hoffenheim this week. And Rose’s comments also suggest that the 19 year old will not be in the United States national team squad for their upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against El Salvador and Canada.
Reyna made an impressive start to the season before his injury, scoring two goals and providing one assist in five appearances for Borussia Dortmund. And the hope will be that we will see him back on the pitch very soon.
