Bundesliga Roundup: Bayern Munich extend lead at the top; FC Köln up to sixth
Matchday 21 of the Bundesliga season saw Bayern Munich open up a nine point at the top of the table as Borussia Dortmund slumped to a damaging defeat against Bayer Leverkusen. While FC Köln moved up to sixth place following their win over SC Freiburg.
Borussia Dortmund’s season reached a new low on Sunday afternoon as they succumbed to a 5-2 defeat at home to Bayer Leverkusen. It was yet another dismal defensive showing from the Black and Yellows, as goals from Florian Wirtz, Robert Andrich, Jonathan Tah and Moussa Diaby helped Leverkusen move closer to second place in the Bundesliga standings.
Bayern Munich couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. The defending champions claimed a 3-2 win over RB Leipzig to extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points. It was a thrilling contest at the Allianz Arena, with Leipzig coming from behind twice. But a second half own goal from Josko Gvardiol proved to be the difference in the end.
FC Köln climbed up to sixth place on the back of a 1-0 win over SC Freiburg. Anthony Modeste scored the only goal of the game in the first half to give the Billy Goats a vital win in their quest to qualify for European football. Freiburg remain in fifth place at the moment, but are now just one point clear of Steffen Baumgart’s side.
Fourth placed Union Berlin suffered a surprise defeat away to FC Augsburg. Michael Gregoritsch and André Hahn scored either side of half time as the Bavarians moved four points clear of the automatic relegation spots.
Mainz 05 handed TSG Hoffenheim their third successive defeat, with Jae-sung Lee and Moussa Niakhate scoring late on to secure a 2-0 win.
VfL Wolfsburg finally ended their winless run with a 4-1 victory over bottom of the table Greuther Fürth. Aster Vranckx scored a brace for Florian Kohfeldt’s side, before Maximilian Arnold and Maximilian Philipp sealed an emphatic win late on.
VfB Stuttgart’s woes continued as they suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. The Eagles took the lead early in the game through Evan N’Dicka, before Waldemar Anton equalised for Stuttgart on the stroke of half time. Ajdin Hrustic’s early goal in the second half was then canceled out by Sasa Kalajdzic, only for the former to score the winner in the 77th minute with a deflected effort.
Borussia Mönchengladbach could only manage a 1-1 draw against Arminia Bielefeld, as Alassane Plea canceled out Jani Serra’s early opener. Hertha Berlin and VfL Bochum also played out a 1-1 draw, with Ishak Belfodil and Sebastian Polter on target.
