Lothar Matthäus believes that Niklas Süle is a great signing for Borussia Dortmund, and he can really stabilise their defence.

The summer transfer window is still a few months away, but Borussia Dortmund have already pulled off the spectacular signing of Niklas Süle. The German international will join the Black and Yellows on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, and will sign a four year contract with the club. Former Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Lothar Matthäus believes that Süle is a great signing for BVB.

"In his column for Sky Sport, Matthäus wrote, “I can only congratulate BVB on the fact that Süle will be wearing the black and yellow jersey next season. A superb transfer. It’s great for Borussia Dortmund to sign one of Germany’s best central defenders from FC Bayern on a free transfer.”"

Süle joined Bayern Munich from TSG Hoffenheim in 2017 and has won four Bundesliga titles, the UEFA Champions League and the DFB-Pokal with the Bavarian giants. Matthäus believes that Süle’s experience, title winning know-how and overall quality will really help Borussia Dortmund in the coming years.

"“Süle knows how to win titles. He brings with him experience, quality and, after his departure from Bayern, certainly a lot of motivation. He will stabilse Dortmund’s weak central defence and lift it to a higher level.”"

Borussia Dortmund’s defensive woes have been well documented this season. Marco Rose’s side have conceded 36 goals in just 21 Bundesliga games so far this season, more than any other team in the league’s top 12. BVB bosses and fans alike will be hoping that the arrival of Süle will help bring some security to the team’s defence.

It will be interesting to see what Süle’s arrival means for the current Borussia Dortmund defenders.

The contracts of Manuel Akanji and Mats Hummels are both set to expire at the end of next season. While Dan-Axel Zagadou will be out of contract in the summer. Reports have claimed in recent weeks that Dortmund would like to extend the contracts of Zagadou and Akanji.
