If this past weekend felt abysmal for Borussia Dortmund and the club’s supporters, then yesterday’s news regarding the signing of Bayern Munich center back Niklas Süle will feel like the perfect antidote to the club’s woes. Süle is set to join the club on a 4 year contract until 2026 with an option to extend, which is frankly fantastic news.

The signing of Süle ticks many of the boxes in regards to the type of player the club needs; a strong, intelligent and quick center back who can make the difference in terms of stifling the  defensive woes the club has been suffering from for years. It is, in addition to this, a signing that shows intent, particularly because of the player’s profile. Süle is by no means a youngster. At 26 years old, Süle is very much heading into his prime, and has won every trophy under the sun with Bayern.

The question then is, why has Süle chosen to move from Bayern to Dortmund? The move in itself, if we’re being honest, certainly seems fanciful when you think about the circumstances, which have previously more often than not been flipped. In Süle’s own words, it didn’t come down to the money per se, but appreciation:

"“From the first contact I felt immediately that those responsible at the club were very interested in working with me. Hans Joachim Watzke, Michael Zorc, Sebastian Kehl and Marco Rose gave me an impressive impression of the role I can play at BVB and I had the feeling that I was wanted as a person and as a footballer. I was impressed by the way they looked after me, so I quickly knew where I was going to play in the future.” Niklas Süle, BILD"

This sentiment of appreciation was echoed by the Borussia Dortmund hierarchy, with incumbent Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl stating the following regarding the transfer:

"“Niklas showed us in our conversations that he is very interested in playing for Borussia Dortmund. He has a lot of experience, composure in the build-up game and the necessary physique to take the next step with us from the summer.” Sebastian Kehl, BILD"
