Report: Manuel Akanji could leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer with Manchester United interested in signing him

Manuel Akanji’s Borussia Dortmund future could be thrown into doubt, with reports claiming that he has rejected a contract extension offer from the club and Manchester United are interested in signing him.
Borussia Dortmund announced the shock signing of Niklas Süle from Bayern Munich earlier this week, with the centre-back set to join the club on a free transfer in the summer. The arrival of Süle could have a big impact on the futures of the other BVB centre-backs. And it appears that Manuel Akanji is one player who could potentially be on his way out in the summer.
According to Sport1, Akanji has rejected Borussia Dortmund’s initial offer to extend his contract and is holding out for a higher salary to move into the category of the club’s top earners. While Dortmund would like to extend Akanji’s contract, they are somewhat limited financially at the moment due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
With Akanji’s current contract set to expire at the end of next season, WAZ report that the BVB bosses will not put any major obstacles in the Swiss international’s way if he decides to leave the club in the summer. But they will demand a fee in the region of 30 million euros.
Sport1 also claim that Manchester United are interested in signing Akanji, and interim head coach Ralf Rangnick is a big fan of the defender. Akanji has said in the past that he used to be a Manchester United fan growing up.
Akanji has been one of Borussia Dortmund’s most consistent performers over the last 12 months. And it will be interesting to see what the future holds for him, especially now that the Black and Yellows have bolstered their defence with the signing of Süle.
