Borussia Dortmund are still hoping to extend Manuel Akanji’s contract, but the decision ultimately lies with the Switzerland international.

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Manuel Akanji’s Borussia Dortmund future in recent days, with reports claiming that he has rejected an initial contract offer from the club. It has also been reported that Manchester United are interested in signing him. But the Black and Yellows remain keen on keeping him at the club.

This is being reported by Kicker, who add that Borussia Dortmund are hoping to extend Akanji’s contract even after the arrival of Niklas Süle from Bayern Munich. However, the magazine also claims that there are a number of factors that suggest that the Switzerland international could leave in the summer.

Akanji’s current contract is set to expire at the end of next season. So if the two parties fail to agree to an extension, Borussia Dortmund will likely look to sell him in the summer in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer in 2023.

If Akanji does decide to leave in the summer, the likelihood is that Borussia Dortmund will look to sign another centre-back. SC Freiburg defender Nico Schlotterbeck has been heavily linked with a move to Dortmund in recent months.
